AMERICAN (HAIR) FOLKTALES :: MEN’S BRAIDS & MARRIAGE

A few weeks ago my friends and I came together to celebrate a wedding. It was great to see how important hair styling was at such an important rite of passage and this was my favorite look. Turns out, this particular look was actually attached to a great story…

According to my friends’ neighbor, these are biker braids. In some biker circles, a man wearing braids indicates that he is, for all intents and purposes, married. The braids are always styled by his woman and the quality of the braids indicate how well his woman takes care of him. Having another woman style the braids is the equivalent of cheating on the woman and if the man takes out the braids himself it signifies that the relationship is over.
