THE NEW FUTURISTIC AESTHETIC OF SALONS AND HAIR

For the past year I’ve been talking about what I think the new futuristic aesthetic is and here is a perfect example of what I’ve been saying.

2001 Space Odyssey undoubtedly influenced the futuristic aesthetic for years after it was released. Smooth, round, minimal, bright, artificial, geometric, plastic, reflective, minimal color palettes… Then there was the dark, brown, dirty, cluttered, apocalyptic aesthetic seen in movies like Mad Max or Duran Duran’s Wild Boys music video.

In 2009, the incredibly futuristic Avatar was released and it fused together both the aesthetics mentioned above but added color and plants. Lots of plants. As it was released in 3D, texture became really important for the viewer. 

Of course this all makes sense. While we currently destroy our planet there’s also a movement toward making things “green”. Green in the sense of color, green in the sense of eco-conservation and sustainability… Then we have technology developing at a very intense speed where movies are now being offered regularly in 3D. The internet, cell phones that serve as mini hand-held computers, digital everything… Add all of this together and voila, we have a new futuristic aesthetic such as this salon.

Wood grain is clearly exposed. The carpet looks like grass. The space is minimal. The mirrors seem to be floating. And it’s bright… It still looks geometric but it’s a much looser geometry. A much looser balance.

I believe this is the future and I believe the future of hair will be using much more natural texture be it straight, frizzy, curly, whatever. And products will be more about nourishing and protecting natural hair thus reflecting the eco-movement to nourish and protect nature. Less blow drying and more natural drying/styling therefore harnessing what hair does naturally creating looser, yet balanced, shapes and looks.

Anyway…that’s my prediction.
