HAIR AND POLITICS
This is Yulia Tymoshenko. She’s the Ukraine’s former Prime Minister. When I saw photos of her, her style, and especially her hair, a shiver went up my spine.
Aesthetics matter. Aesthetics are powerful. HAIR is powerful. If Mrs Tymoshenko simply wore her stylish wardrobe (for which she’s also well known), she would only look like a beautiful and fashionable woman. But wearing a traditional braid together with a wardrobe that’s conservative yet feminine, traditional yet modern, professional yet soft tells the public that she expects the world to respect her as a leader.
And apparently it does. Considered a threat to her political arch nemesis, Ukraine President Viktor Yanukovych, she was recently sentenced to 7 years in prison over an “abuse of power” where Yanukovych is largely considered to have been responsible for her imprisonment. However, the United States and European Union considered the trial and verdict to have been both unjust and politically motivated and have called for her release.
Hair. It matters.
By Pia Vivas at Hair Friend.Wish I could go to this today. Going to try to get some footage/video to show the students:
“GOING OVER” is an illustrated meditation on the global marketing of masculinity through hair, hair products and signature hairstyles, focusing on the microcosm of Kuwait and the ‘exiting of trends’ by Kuwati youth, in contrast with the hair conservatism of an older generation. In this presentation, Al Qadiri and Al Gharaballi explore historic comparisons, hair regulation reports from Iran and a case study conducted in Kuwait; the discussion will expose the delicate relationship between hair and culture and, more specifically, between barber and client. Commissioned by DIS magazine and Bidoun Projects.
*This will be recorded and played on DIS Magazine’s site. Can’t wait to share it.

Three great things that I love: sectioning and ponytails. For a minute there I thought this was a photo but it’s actually an illustration. Beautiful! If anyone knows who the artist is, let me know. :-)
Love it. Only wish there was an aerial photograph.
